It may sound hard for you to believe: there are actually alternatives to the ubiquitous startup company of USA. While it sounds surreal and counterproductive, startup companies are not for all entrepreneurs. If you want to launch a successful startup company of USA, you need to have a sound business plan, lots of seed capital (which most entrepreneurs get from angel investors), the strong ability to generate sales and make money, and enough business acumen to make it in any competitive industry. If you don’t have all of these traits, your startup company of USA will fail. So what do you do if you fall in the category of people who aren’t cut out for the startup world, but still want the challenges, joys, and freedom of running their own enterprises? The answers are below:
- Become a freelancer
When you are a freelancer, you in essence have a sole proprietorship because you are the only employee in your company. You still get all of the flexibilities and freedom that come with being your own boss and the owner of your own business – you get to decide the hours and days you want to work, you get to decide how much you want to work in a week, and you get to decide the types of work tasks you want to do (you will not even have that kind of freedom as a startup owner because you will have to work all hours of the day and night, you will ‘wear many hats,’ and you will end up doing ‘unglamorous’ work in the attempt to keep personnel cost and staff salaries down!), among other things. The best thing about being a freelancer is that, similar to being the owner of a startup company of USA, you are not going to fire yourself, unless of course your freelancing business is unsuccessful – in that case, you would have no other choice but to fold your business, declare for corporate bankruptcy, and fire yourself. The best part of being a freelancer is that most of the business opportunities for freelancers exist online which means that you can work anywhere you want provided that you have a working computer and Internet connection! Also, since you are only finding customers for yourself, you will not have to worry about the huge overhead and variable costs that owners of startup companies are constantly faced with. You also do not have to worry about offering quality customer service (which is very expensive) to keep your customers happy and loyal, and you do not have to deal with pesky and temperamental suppliers and distributors like owners of startup companies do. You just create a decent looking website that will attract clients, pay for hosting, and voila…you are in business!

- Start a crafts business, a jewelry making business is a good example
If you have ever scoured Etsy.com or similar websites, you will find that it is full of women entrepreneurs who have a part-time business which they do in addition to their 9-5 job. The part-time business is very flexible and allows them to work whenever they have a spare minute. Many of these women choose to start their own jewelry making businesses, because, well jewelry sells! All you need to do is set up a decent looking website and be able to take decent looking pictures of your jewelry that will look very professional online and half of the battle has been won! You don’t need to be a webmaster to know how to design a professional website and the content that will attract people to your website – many free websites exist like Wix.com which will be more than happy to do that task for you. You also don’t have to worry about copyright in terms of images, because many websites exist which offer people like you free images to use on websites (a good example is picmonkey.com). You also don’t really have to worry about spending lots of time or big bucks on advertising because Etsy.com will promote your business for you. You simply create a profile page describing your business and the goods it sells, link your website to it, and watch the money come in!
- Start a company that sells services
This may seem counterproductive at first sight, after all don’t a lot of startup companies offer services to their customers? However, you could start an online business as a nanny, an amateur interior decorator, or a housekeeper, etc…All you would need to do is create a decent looking website which would attract people to it. You would have to use good graphics, images, and content to keep them there, but there a lot of free websites with amazing pictures, images, and graphics that will allow you to do this. Additionally, there are a lot of websites out there that are WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get). What this means that you don’t have to be a webmaster, nor do you have to know a lot of fancy and complex programming languages like HTML, Java, and C++ to create a professional website that will amaze your visitors, motivate them to stay and actually buy your services – there are a ton of WYSIWYG websites with templates (free and paid) which will walk you through this process on a step-by-step basis. You also don’t even have to worry about online or digital marketing. You simply go to your neighborhood printer, print out a lot of attractive looking fliers and business cards which explain to your customers what your business is, the services it offers, and the prices that you charge for your services, and distribute them around the neighborhood. You probably see these fliers and business cards stuck in your front door and thrown on your doorstep all of the time. Seeing as a lot of rich people hate doing their own gardening, and cleaning their own houses, and want someone else to take care of their kids at least some of the time, you would be a fool not to do this especially if you are capable of starting a business that offers quality services in these areas. Since people will pay decent money for these services, it would be decent and easy money for you, so why not do it?
The examples listed above are only a few of many alternatives to startup companies out there. You can make money without sinking in thousands in the investment and business expenses which are traditionally associated with startup companies. All you need to do is be a creative and independent thinker who is willing to do some research beforehand, and you will have your own successful online business before you know it!
